What state of DESIGN, BERLIN ESSENTIALLY IS
In its search for new ways to present design, state of DESIGN, BERLIN freely mixes existing formats, such as that of a fair, showroom, museum, gallery, conference, get together, party and shop. Doing away with the limitations of a fair stand, for instance, all works will be presented as a carefully curated whole. And animated by a program of daily talks, the editions will debate aspects of what the next generation design might be — open, frank, fragile, honest, transparent, stripped down to its bare essentials, daring and provocative — at times of crisis, with change urgently needed. And while the latter is a novelty, leading design schools are invited to have their own platform, focusing on the experimental. Totally in tune with the rest of the exhibition, they will reveal another design, which is all too often ignored.
Two exhibitions standing central to each edition of the festival:
NIEUWE GERMAN GESTALTUNG
NIEUWE GLOBAL GESTALTUNG
These two exhibitions will be complementary: while, as the name implies, the first exhibition will focus on the latest, best, and most innovative in german design, and instigate the dialogue debate between industrial and new forms of more experimental design, the second one will be international in scope, and highlight and research socially more responsible efforts in design.
The diptych will be completed by some satellite exhibitions that play on related themes, and will be spread over the city.
