State of DESIGN, BERLIN director Max Borka will be one of the 3 jury members of 20 x 2020, an open challenge that is part of the most ambitious Design in the Middle project, and in which architects, artists, designers and social activists are invited to develop design alternative futures for the Middle East by submitting a Design Comment in the shape of a 20 second video clip. Design in the middle is an initiative of the Maxxi National Museum of the 21st Century Arts, and the School of Redesign in Rome, in collaboration with Fondazione Baruchello and Fondazione Mondo Digitale. Other jury members will be Pippo Ciorra, Senior Curator at Maxxi Architettura, and Doreen Toutikian, Director of Beirut Design Week. Submissions will be published within 24 hours on the project’s digital platform, and shown on a large screen at the MAXXI Museum for five days between March 1-5, 2017, during a Design in the Middle Workshop. Five outstanding contributions will be selected by the jury. Design Comments should explore and present a short scenario and proposal on one of 5 challenges: Food Print (Water and food rights and resources, new agriculture, new energy), Nomadentity (Open borders, immigration, dignity and identity, self-respect, self-identification), Lost in translation (Communication, cultural exchanges, e-learning), Core.Ligious (Freedom of belief, living with religious diversity, new awareness, personal spiritualism, DIY belief), or Digital Dunes (Data harvesting, mining and sharing that promote social cohesion). Deadline for submissions is March 1, 2017.
