VERA STASSEN | BHUT

A porcelain set comprising a cup and a saucer. The bottom of the cup isround to fit the hands comfortably. The inside graces a golden line drawn byhand, which shows the filling quantity, among other things. It also marks the part above the line that stays cooler and can be held with fingers or touched by lips, without any risk of burning. “I wanted to establish a close and intimate contact between the cup and user, “ Stassen explains, “Enhancing the daily ritual, and a feeling of rest.” Vera Stassen was born in 1986 in Essen, Germany and lives in Krefeld. She completed her apprenticeship to become a goldsmith in Kevelaer and afterwards studied product design at the Niederrhein university of applied sciences in Krefeld and at the Aalto university in Helsinki, Finland. Furthermore, she attended external courses at the Düsseldorf university of applied sciences, the Folkwang university of the arts in Essen and the Cologne International School of Design: “My approach is a process and research that reach beyond aesthetics and materials. I embark on a quest that deals with complex themes such as environment, material, nature and human senses. From a purely technical point of view, itseems we can do everything. But everything is not good enough. Although an on-going fascination in ceramics dominate my work, with my background as goldsmith and the studies in product design I deal with various materials and ideas in a scientific, artistic and practice-oriented way to articulate valid questions. We live in a world of change. We have to stay curious, hungry for knowledge and willing to learn.”
