SUSANNE STAUCH, ANNA BADUR & UNIVERSITÄT DER KUNSTE UdK BERL | LOVE SCHOOL
This project grew from a semester of exchange between pupils from the Love School in Nairobi's slum Kawangware, in Kenya and design students from UdK Berlin, first online, and recently culminated in a hands on workshop with the students at the Love School (be it on a voluntary basis, without further support by the University). In a co-creation process, experiments were done with porcelain, clay, plaster, fine metal, fibre, sisal, veneer, plastic bags, PET bottles, corrugated sheet metal and bulk trash. The final sale of the objects that resulted. served the purchase of a piece of land for the continuously displaced Love School Center, which will be cleared out once again due to speculation. But more in general, the project had also set itself the aim to question the principles of education, development aid, cultural and societal barriers both internationally and within Kenya. and the general hype around digitalization, exploring the theory of embodied cognition which emphasizes the importance of physicality in the process of learning. The long term vision even included the development of methods and settings of creative learning that can be applied in short, mid or longterm workshops and classes all around the world. UdK professor Susanne Stauch developed the concept of the project and got Anna Badur on board to supervise it. While both will exhibit their own work elsewhere in the festival, they will also lecture on the project during the festival.
