MARIJA PUIPATE, VYTAUTAS NARJEVICIUS AND GVIDAS RAUDONIUS FOR ŠIAUR | VASE & CUP

Šiaurė [‘shəu-rē] is Lithuanian for ‘North’, but the eponymous Lithuanian design brand also took it as its name because it stands for ‘a place where rationality of design meets the mastery of craftsmanship’. It create products by inviting designers, artists, and craftsmen to collaborate on handcrafted pieces. This hand-thrown pottery vase with a lid was created by Marija Puipate and Vytautas Narjevicius, who took their inspiration from a 17th century bottle, an archaeological finding in a Lithuanian manor. The vase was made with white clay from Spain, glaze, and nanotechnological impregnation. Empty, its simple raw beauty is just as appealing as when it is filled with a bouquet. The two parts are made for easy washing. While the inside is glazed, the outside is left untreated, so that the user may feel the matt clay texture. All pieces are handmade, so their sizes vary. The same goes for the cup, which was created in collaboration with Gvidas Raudonius, using dark brown clay. Its shape is mainly defined by the haptic. A handle was eliminated to impose close contact with the cup on the user. But its skin is thick enough to protect hands from heat. While the inside is glazed, the outside kept the original matt clay texture.
