RENE SOUVAGIE | NAIL NAILS NAIL

Currently operating from a barge, the Foujiyama, and next to doing plenty of other things, René Souvagie has been working for four decades with metal, as a bronze caster, and an interior- and jewelry designer. As the name implies, Nail Nails Nail, the jewelry collection which Souvagie presents at the state of DESIGN, BERLIN 2017, is based on the simplest of tools, the nail, yet comes with a story and history. “It goes back to the very origins of design, as the art of connecting things, “ Souvagie explains, “The moment in time when the nail developed into a T-shape in the iron age marks these very beginnings, and enabled man to build and construct much more easily efficiently. Elemental and strong, it stands for everything I always strived for. To celebrate this preciousness, I gave it a status of a jewel, in gold. I turned it into a ring, more than anything else the symbol of what binds people. And to stress their connecting power I made one nail nail the other. These days, with so many preaching the great divide, you may also see it as a political statement, of course.” Images: Anna Pannekoek
