BRAM KERKHOFS | COIL

Bram Kerkhofs, who was recently awarded designer of the year in Belgium, graduated as a master goldsmith and studied sculpting in stone. Today, as a furniture designer, he still has that same passion for hinges, joints and the forces and possibilities these connecting elements can generate, and for materials and their haptic. Next tot this, his work strongly focuses on mathematical systems, and is very architectural. Many of his designs are meant as part of a larger whole, and connected to each other. It may partly explain why he chose Connecties –Dutch for connections- as a title for the exhibition, in which he confronts his work with that of five other Flemish artist-, design- and architectural studios of his choice at the festival.

Coil (2015) is a wardrobe system of which the front and the sides consist of a semi-transparent curtain of elastic ropes. To get into wardrobe, one simply has to draw the strained elastics aside, after which they automatically return to their original position.
