BRAM KERKHOFS | TURN

Bram Kerkhofs, who was recently awarded designer of the year in Belgium, graduated as a master goldsmith and studied sculpting in stone. Today, as a furniture designer, he still has that same passion for hinges, joints and the forces and possibilities these connecting elements can generate, and for materials and their haptic. Next tot this, his work strongly focuses on mathematical systems, and is very architectural. Many of his designs are meant as part of a larger whole, and connected to each other. It may partly explain why he chose Connecties –Dutch for connections- as a title for the exhibition, in which he confronts his work with that of five other Flemish artist-, design- and architectural studios of his choice at the festival. Kerkhofs presents four works at the exhibition.

Turn is a wardrobe system in which hinges – and the tension between public and private - play an essential role. It consists of three simple containers that are open to the front and closed to the back, and that can turn on their axis. With a simple turn users can decide if their contents can be revealed or not. The piece, not surprisingly, is also an ideal element to connect two walls, by bridging an otherwise lost corner.
